+MSUM | 2017

The Green Drawings is a project that uses the logic of free market capitalism to limit the total amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions into the atmosphere. From a cynical perspective, the project uses the same neoliberal logic that controls carbon dioxide emissions, to enable art consumers to buy themselves a guilt-free conscience.

On the occasion of the centennial of the October Revolution we are exhibiting a selection of works from the Arteast 2000+ collection by artists from the former Soviet Union, whose art is based on the avant-garde traditions of “Red October.”

In 2007, three Slovenian artists joined the conservative Slovenian Democratic Party (SDS) and officially changed their names to that of the leader of the party, the Prime Minister of Slovenia at the time, Janez Janša. While they renamed themselves for personal reasons, the boundaries between their lives and their art began to blur in numerous and unforeseen ways.

In Pavilion, Peter Rauch continues to follow the method developed in his series Objects and Community, basing his approach on his understanding of the correlation between an object and its function, or the meaning of an object and the situations and contents produced by or related to it. The constructed object-space is a temporary pavilion with an added auditory dimension, part of the process of event-making.

A person can become free through acts of disobedience by learning to say no to power. | Not only is the capacity for disobedience the condition for freedom; freedom is also the condition for disobedience.

The exhibition is now traveling to one of the most prominent art museums in the world, the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid, where it will run from 28 June 2017 through 8 January 2018. It is being opened on 27 June 2017 by the President of the Republic of Slovenia Borut Pahor and by His Majesty King Felipe VI of Spain.

The documentary exhibition about monuments related to World War II and erected in Slovenia at the time of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia was developed at the seminar “Art for Community Use” at the Department of Art History of the University of Ljubljana, in cooperation with the Moderna galerija. The title of the seminar should be indicative – it should guide students towards the art placed in public space, intended for the broader public and common use, and created in complex co-authorship.

The Eighties through the Prism of Events, Exhibitions, and Discourses – Part 2, curators: Barbara Borčić, Igor Španjol

The exhibition Low-Budget Utopias presents works that come largely from the Moderna galerija’s Arteast 2000+ Collection. This is the eighth installation of the collection in which we develop the notion of the collection as a tool. In the present exhibition we explain the collection and the museum as tools that help to sustain a utopian consciousness.

Overall, security is becoming the universal excuse given by the authorities for consolidating their power and increasing their repression, while human lives and destinies are once again being divided into more and less valuable ones.

NEW AQUISITION FOR THE COLLECTION | The film The Excluded. In a Moment of Danger is based on a theater performance by members of the School of Engaged Art. Thematically the work is connected with the recent social situation in Russia—the failure of citizen-led initiatives, government repression, and the overall sense of depression that has overcome people.
