MG+MSUM | NEWSPAPER PUBLICATION | A Memory without Evidence

A Memory without Evidence is a new newspaper publication co-published by Moderna galerija and Založba ZRC.

Created at workshops with displaced groups, the newspaper presents stories of people who have exchanged life behind razor wire, between mines and in systemic violence marking the Balkan refugee route for captivity within the EU asylum system. Contributors to the publication are Zied Abdellaoui, Desmond Happy, Zahra and Yasmin*, Soufian Hassan, Mohammad Khan, Mohamed Abdul Monaem, Etaf Abdelrahman, Afran Ahmadi, and Jošt Franko, who conceived and managed the project.

We’ve lost all of our history and documents as refugees,” said Mohamad Abdul Monaem while working on the publication, “We’ve only kept our memories, memories without evidence.” Longing for a place to belong to and a sense of community are the common thread of the contributions. Their authors do not only strive for acceptance and inclusion, but also critically address the systemic issues they have been subjected to on the route and as refugees.

The newspaper publication challenges the portrayal of refugees as passive victims of decontextualized violence. Rather, it represents the vocal, articulate, and thoughtful reflections of displaced persons whose experiences address universal systemic issues closely related to the figure of a person on the move. In their contributions, the authors discuss topics related to violence, racism, class struggle, the history and the future of migrations, and everyday life in refugee camps. A Memory without Evidence consists of visual documentation of asylum seekers’ and refugees’ earlier lives, testimonies, articles, poetry, and oral histories of people who have only recently found refuge.

The publication is available in the MG+MSUM bookstores.
