This timely collection of critical essays and creative pieces addresses several thought-provoking questions on the subject. For instance, as this so-called crisis is but the latest of many, what part has "crisis" played in the humanities' history? How are artists, art historians, and professionals in related disciplines responding to current pressures to prove their worth? How does one defend the practical value of knowing how to think deeply about objects and images without losing the intellectual intensity that characterizes the best work in the discipline? Does art history as we know it have a future?" --> na ov. - Opombe z bibliografijo na koncu prispevkov

BENJAMIN, Andrew E.
Art's philosophical work / Andrew Benjamin. - London ; New York : Rowman & Littlefield International, cop. 2015. - XXIV, 271 str. : ilustr. ; 22 cm

"What is the work of art? How does art work as art? Andrew Benjamin contends that the only way to address these questions is by developing a radically new materialist philosophy of art, and by rethinking the history of art from within that perspective. A materialist philosophy of art starts with the contention that meaning is only ever the after effect of the way in which materials work. Starting with the relation between history, materials and work (art's work), this book opens up a highly original reconfiguration of the philosophy of art. Benjamin undertakes a major project that seeks to develop a set of complex interarticulations between art history and an approach to art's work that emphasizes art's material presence. A philosophy of art emerges from the limitations of aesthetics." --> na ov. - Bibliografija: str. 257-267. - Kazalo

BERNS, Roy S., 1954-
Color science and the visual arts : a guide for conservators, curators, and the curious / Roy S. Berns. - Los Angeles : Getty Conservation Institute, cop. 2016. - 208 str. : ilustr. ; 26 cm

"A curator, a paintings conservator, a photographer, and a conservation scientist walk into a bar." What happens next? In lively and accessible prose, color science expert Roy S. Berns helps the reader understand complex color-technology concepts and offers solutions to problems that occur when art is displayed, conserved, imaged, or reproduced. Berns writes for two types of audiences: museum professionals seeking explanations for common color-related issues and students in conservation, museum studies, and art history programs. The seven chapters in the book fall naturally into two sections: fundamentals, covering topics such as spectral measurements, metamerism, or color inconstancy; and applications, where artwork display, painting materials, and color reproduction are discussed. A unique feature of this book is the use of more than 200 images as its main medium of communication, employing color physics, color vision, and imaging science to produce visualizations throughout the pages. An annotated bibliography complements the main text with suggestions for further reading and more in-depth study of particular topics. Engaging, incisive, and absolutely critical for any scholar or student interested in color science, Color Science and the Visual Arts is sure to become a key reference for the entire field." --> na ov. - Bibliografija pri posameznih poglavjih in na str. 201-204. - Kazalo

BOCCIONI, Umberto, 1882-1916
Futurist painting sculpture : (plastic dynamism) / Umberto Boccioni ; introduction by Maria Elena Versari ; translation by Richard Shane Agin and Maria Elena Versari. - Los Angeles : Getty Research Institute, cop. 2016. - IX, 293 str. : ilustr. ; 26 cm. - (Texts & documents)

Vsebuje tudi prevod dela: Pittura scultura futuriste. - "This fiery and influential book, available for the first time in English, presents an Italian Futurist's radical ideas about art and architecture Futurist Painting Sculpture (Plastic Dynamism), a truly radical book by Umberto Boccioni (1882-1916), claimed a central position in artistic debates of the 1910s and 1920s, exerting a powerful influence on the Italian Futurist movement as well as on the entire European historical avant-garde, including Dada and Constructivism. Today, Boccioni is best known as an artist whose paintings and sculptures are prized for their revolutionary aesthetic by American and European museums. But Futurist Painting Sculpture demonstrates that he was also the foremost avant-garde theorist of his time. In his distinctive, exhilarating prose style, Boccioni not only articulates his own ideas about the Italian movement's underpinnings and goals but also systematizes the principles expressed in the vast array of manifestos that the Futurists had already produced. Featuring photographs of fifty-one key works and a large selection of manifestos devoted to the visual arts, Boccioni's book established the canon of Italian Futurist art for many years to come.First published in Italian in 1914, Futurist Painting Sculpture has never been available in English-until now. This edition includes a critical introduction by Maria Elena Versari. Drawing on the extensive Futurist archives at the Getty Research Institute, Versari systematically retraces, for the first time, the evolution of Boccioni's ideas and arguments; his attitude toward contemporary political, racial, philosophical, and scientific debates; and his polemical view of Futurism's role in the development of modern art." --> na ov. - Opombe z bibliografijo: str. 265-283. - Kazalo

Constantin Brancusi : sculpting the essence of things / [text] James Pearson. - 3rd ed. - Maidstone : Crescent Moon Publishing, 2011. - 160 str. : ilustr. ; 24 cm. - (Sculptors series)

"Constantin Brancusi is one of the greatest of all sculptors, and a key sculptor of the modern era, with Auguste Rodin and Pablo Picasso. Brancusi's influence can be seen in a wide range of Western sculptors, including Donald Judd, Carl Andre, Henry Moore, Jean Arp, Barbara Hepworth, Minimalists and land artists. This new book studies the religious and mythical dimensions of Constantin Brancusi's distinctive scultpural forms, the 'eggs', 'fishes', 'heads' and 'columns'. CÉZANNE, Paul
Paul Cézanne / [text] Jon Kear. - London : Reaktion Books, 2016. - 245 str. : ilustr. ; 20 cm. - (Critical lives)

"Few artists have exerted such an influence on modern art as Paul Cezanne. Picasso, Braque and Matisse all acknowledged a profound debt to his painting, and many historians regard him as the father of modernism. This new biography reexamines Cezanne's life and art, discussing the central events and people who shaped his work and placing his oeuvre in the context of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century art and culture.Jon Kear examines Cezanne's youth in Provence, a formative period which left a deep and abiding impression on the artist's painting, as well as exploring his turbulent time in Paris and the larger-than-life artistic persona he created for himself during these years. His initial style, characterized by violent and explicit subject-matter and a rugged manner of painting, gave rise to an enduring mythology of the artist. Paul Cezanne explores the personal and artistic relationships that influenced Cezanne: from his close friendship with Emile Zola to his artistic dialogue with Manet, collaboration with Camille Pissarro and association with the Impressionists. Above all, Paul Cezanne tells the story of his life as a part of the pivotal shift towards the twentieth century, illuminating how much his work and ideas helped to usher it in." --> na ov. - Selected bibliography: str. 236-243

"The radical project an Exhibit emerged from a decade of testing the formats and possibilities of exhibition-making. A collaboration between two artists, Richard Hamilton and Victor Pasmore, and critic Lawrence Alloway, the show was simultaneously an investigation into abstract environmental forms and a participatory experiment that would fundamentally transform the role of the viewer. Comprehensive documentation of the original exhibition is presented alongside coverage of other key projects from the era and contextualised through the detailed analysis of Elena Crippa. Archival texts conveying the different voices of an Exhibits three creators and an essay from the time by David Sylvester are accompanied by new contributions by Martin Beck, Owen Hatherley and Lucy Steeds. The CURATORIAL : a philosophy of curating / edited by Jean-Paul Martinon. - New York ; London : Bloomsbury Academic, cop. 2015. - XIX, 255 str. : ilustr. ; 24 cm

"This book starts from this simple premise: thinking the activity of curating. To do that, it distinguishes between 'curating' and 'the curatorial'. If 'curating' is a gamut of professional practices for setting up exhibitions, then 'the curatorial' explores what takes place on the stage set up, both intentionally and unintentionally, by the curator. It therefore refers not to the staging of an event, but to the event of knowledge itself. In order to start thinking about curating, this book takes a new approach to the topic. Instead of relying on conventional art historical narratives (for example, identifying the moments when artistic and curatorial practices merged or when the global curator-author was first identified), this book puts forward a multiplicity of perspectives that go from the anecdotal to the theoretical and from the personal to the philosophical." --> na ov. - Bibliografija: str. 245-252. - Kazalo

CURATORIAL dreams : critics imagine exhibitions / edited by Shelley Ruth Butler and Erica Lehrer. - Montreal ; Kingston ; London ; Chicago : McGill-Queen's University Press, cop. 2016. - XII, 383 str. : ilustr. ; 23 cm

"What if museum critics were challenged to envision their own exhibitions? In Curatorial Dreams, fourteen authors from disciplines throughout the social sciences and humanities propose exhibitions inspired by their research and critical concerns to creatively put theory into practice. Pushing the boundaries of museology, this collection gives rare insight into the process of conceptualizing exhibitions. The contributors offer concrete, innovative projects, each designed for a specific setting in which to translate critical academic theory about society, culture, and history into accessible imagined exhibitions. Spanning Australia, Barbados, Canada, Chile, the Netherlands, Poland, South Africa, Switzerland, and the United States, the exhibitions are staged in museums, scientific institutions, art galleries, and everyday sites. Essays explore political and practical constraints, imaginative freedom, and experiment with critical, participatory, and socially relevant exhibition design. While the deconstructive critique of museums remains relevant, Curatorial Dreams charts new ground, proposing unique modes of engagement that enrich public scholarship and dialogue." --> na ov. - Bibliografija: str. 335-367. - Kazalo

Biennials, triennials, and documenta : the exhibitions that created contemporary art / Charles Green and Anthony Gardner. - Chichester : Wiley Blackwell, 2016. - VIII, 296 str. : ilustr. ; 23 cm

"In this engaging and insightful new treatise, Charles Green and Anthony Gardner examine in depth the history and popularization of large scale international survey exhibitions, or biennials , and their impact on contemporary art since the 1950s. From the 1972 director driven documenta 5 at Kassel to the rise of mega exhibitions across Asia in the 1990s and 2000s, and the renewed ascendancy of gargantuan biennials in the 21st century, Biennials, Triennials and Documenta offers a comprehensive history of biennialization that is global in scope. In addition to interrogating specific curatorial models and methods, Green and Gardner use the history of biennials as a means of illustrating and inciting further discussions of globalization in contemporary art." --> na ov. - Bibliografija na koncu posameznih poglavij. - Kazalo

JAEGER, C. Stephen
Enchantment : on charisma and the sublime in the arts of the West / C. Stephen Jaeger. - Philadelphia : University of Pennsylvania Press, cop. 2012. - 424 str. : ilustr. ; 23 cm. - (Haney Foundation series)

"What is the force in art, C. Stephen Jaeger asks, that can enter our consciousness, inspire admiration or imitation, and carry a reader or viewer from the world as it is to a world more sublime? We have long recognized the power of individuals to lead or enchant by the force of personal charisma-and indeed, in his award-winning Envy of Angels, Jaeger himself brilliantly parsed the ability of charismatic teachers to shape the world of medieval learning. In Enchantment, he turns his attention to a sweeping and multifaceted exploration of the charisma not of individuals but of art. For Jaeger, the charisma of the visual arts, literature, and film functions by creating an exalted semblance of life, a realm of beauty, sublime emotions, heroic motives and deeds, godlike bodies and actions, and superhuman abilities, so as to dazzle the humbled spectator and lift him or her up into the place so represented. Charismatic art makes us want to live in the higher world that it depicts, to behave like its heroes and heroines, and to think and act according to their values. It temporarily weakens individual will and rational critical thought. It brings us into a state of enchantment. Ranging widely across periods and genres, Enchantment investigates the charismatic effect of an ancient statue of Apollo on the poet Rilke, of the painter Durer's self-portrayal as a figure of Christ-like magnificence, of a numinous Odysseus washed ashore on Phaeacia, and of the black-and-white projection of Fred Astaire dancing across the Depression-era movie screen. From the tattoos on the face of a Maori tribesman to the haunting visage of Charlotte Rampling in a film by Woody Allen, Jaeger's extraordinary book explores the dichotomies of reality and illusion, life and art that are fundamental to both cultic and aesthetic experience." --> na ov. - Opombe z bibliografijo: str. 379-415. - Kazalo

KEMP, Wolfgang
Der explizite Betrachter : zur Rezeption zeitgenössischer Kunst / Wolfgang Kemp. - Konstanz : Konstanz University Press, cop. 2015. - 242 str. : ilustr. ; 22 cm

"Kunstausstellungen produzieren Ausstellungskunst" konstatierte Werner Hofmann bereits 1970." --> na zavihku ov. - Opombe z bibliografijo: str. 223-242

LÉGER, Marc James
Brave new avant garde : essays on contemporary art and politics / Marc James Léger. - Winchester ; Washington : Zero Books, 2012. - X, 197 str. : ilustr. ; 22 cm

"Brave New Avant Garde is a collection of essays that ask the questions: what is an adequate model of contemporary avant garde practice and what are its theoretical premises? With this it asks the related question, echoing Alain Badiou: must the avant garde hypothesis be abandoned? Brave New Avant Garde stands in opposition to postmodern post-politics and the view that radical practice has no other future than its reduction to the workings of the free market in the form of the "simple process of cultural production" or to variations on the cultural politics of representation. Today's avant garde, formed in the wake of the end of the Soviet Union and the rise of the anti-globalization movement, represents a counter-power that rejects the inevitability of capitalist integration. The way out for artists in today's world of creative industries is defined in these pages as a psychoanalytically informed sinthomeopathic practice, a critical identification with prevailing conditions of production that avoids the surplus enjoyment of the ideology of postmodern pluralism." --> na ov. - Opombe z bibliografijo: str. 161-197

Large scale : fabricating sculpture in the 1960s and 1970s / Jonathan D. Lippincott ; [foreword by Hugh M. Davies ; introduction by Patterson Sims]. - New York : Princeton Architectural Press, cop. 2010. - 256 str. : ilustr. ; 28 cm

In 1966, if artists wanted to create works larger than their studios or their own metalworking abilities, they had to turn to industrial manufacturers, usually steel fabricators or boat builders, who were unable to accommodate nonlinear, creative process of making art. Lippincott Inc. was the first company to put the tools of industrial fabrication at the disposal of artists, and for nearly a decade and a half the only company of its kind. Its founders, Donald Lippincott and Roxanne Everett, meticulously and fortuitously documented the working process of the most important American artists of the twentieth century as they created some of the most iconic sculptures of the time and their careers. Large Scale: Fabricating Sculpture in the 1960s and 1970s includes over 300 previously unseen of photographs that offers unique insights into key artists works and their working process. Many of the sculptures are shown at different stages of fabrication; sculptures being installed in public spaces, museums, and galleries. The images, culled from photographs in Lippincott s archives, were taken primarily by Everett, who was vice president at the company from its inception until 1978. Very few of the photographs have been published before, and the collection has not been accessible. The photographs are presented with narrative captions, providing a visual history of the artists at work. The author, Don Lippincott s son, was familiar with most of the work as well as the artists, having often visited the shop as a child, and provides a unique look at this body of work. An introduction by Patterson Sims as well as new information, interviews, and commentary from artists, Lippincott fabricators, curators, and collectors. Artists who worked with Lippincott included: Ronald Bladen; Jonathan Borofsky; Robert Breer; Jean Dubuffet; Nancy Graves; Red Grooms; Robert Grosvener; Keith Haring; Robert Indiana; Donald Judd; Menashe Kadishman; Ellsworth Kelly; June Leaf; Roy Lichtenstein; Marisol; Clement Meadmore; Robert Morris; Robert Murray; Forrest Myers; Louise Nevelson; Barnett Newman; Claes Oldenberg; George Rickey [to be confirmed]; James Rosati; Tony Rosenthal; Lucas Samaras; Tony Smith; Tal Streeter; George Sugarman; Michael Todd; Ernst Trova; William Underhill; David Von Schlegell; Tom Wesselmann; William Wiley; Isaac Witkin." --> na ov. - Bibliografija: str. 250-251. - Kazalo

MEDOSCH, Armin
New tendencies : art at the threshold of the information revolution (1961-1978) / Armin Medosch. - Cambridge (Mass.) ; London : The MIT Press, 2016. - X, 395 str. : ilustr. ; 24 cm. - (Leonardo book series)

"New Tendencies, a nonaligned modernist art movement, emerged in the early 1960s in the former Yugoslavia, a nonaligned country. It represented a new sensibility, rejecting both Abstract Expressionism and socialist realism in an attempt to formulate an art adequate to the age of advanced mass production. In this book, Armin Medosch examines the development of New Tendencies as a major international art movement in the context of social, political, and technological history. Doing so, he traces concurrent paradigm shifts: the change from Fordism (the political economy of mass production and consumption) to the information society, and the change from postwar modernism to dematerialized postmodern art practices. Medosch explains that New Tendencies, rather than opposing the forces of technology as most artists and intellectuals of the time did, imagined the rapid advance of technology to be a springboard into a future beyond alienation and oppression. Works by New Tendencies cast the viewer as coproducer, abolishing the idea of artist as creative genius and replacing it with the notion of the visual researcher. In 1968 and 1969, the group actively turned to the computer as a medium of visual research, anticipating new media and digital art. Medosch discusses modernization in then-Yugoslavia and other nations on the periphery; looks in detail at New Tendencies' five major exhibitions in Zagreb (the capital of Croatia); and considers such topics as the group's relation to science, the changing relationship of manual and intellectual labor, New Tendencies in the international art market, their engagement with computer art, and the group's eventual eclipse by other "new art practices" including conceptualism, land art, and arte povera. Numerous illustrations document New Tendencies' works and exhibitions." --> na zavihku ov. - Bibliografija: str. 303-354. - Kazalo

The NEW curator : researcher, commissioner, keeper, interpreter, producer, collaborator / [writing and editing Coline Milliard, Rafal Niemojewski, Ben Borthwick, Jonathan Watkins ; interviews, chapter-opening texts and curator introductions Natasha Hoare]. - London : Laurence King Publishing, 2016. - 240 str. : ilustr. ; 29 cm

"This book presents a snapshot of the most interesting curatorial practices in the art world today. There is an emphasis on the "now": the introduction sketches in the development of curatorial practices since the 1980s but the shows under scrutiny in the following twenty-five case studies have all taken place in the last few years. The selected exhibitions - chosen by an expert panel of curators - run the global gamut, from Europe and the U.S. through Africa and the Middle East to China, and illustrate the particular challenges for curators working in both the commercial and public sectors. Large-scale shows and pop-up exhibits, permanent-collection rehangs and art fairs all have a place here. Each highly illustrated case study is structured around an interview with the curator responsible for the show. The text both tells the story of the show's making and fills in background information about the curator's work, resulting in an accessible guide to contemporary curating." --> na ov. - Kazalo

STAVRINAKI, Maria
Dada presentism : an essay on art & history / Maria Stavrinaki ; translated by Daniela Ginsburg. - Stanford : Stanford University Press, cop. 2016. - 107 str. : ilustr. ; 22 cm

"Dada is often celebrated for its strategies of shock and opposition, but in Dada Presentism, Maria Stavrinaki provides a new picture of Dada art and writings as a lucid reflection on history and the role of art within it. The original (Berlin-based) Dadaists' acute historical consciousness and their modern experience of time, she contends, anticipated the formulations of major historians such as Reinhart Koselleck and, more recently, Francois Hartog. The book explores Dada temporalities and concepts of history in works of art, artistic discourse, and in the photographs of the Berlin Dada movement. These photographs-including the famous one of the First International Dada Fair-are presented not as simple, transparent documents, but as formal deployments conforming to a very concrete theory of history. This approach allows Stavrinaki to link Dada to more contemporary artistic movements and practices interested in history and the archive. At the same time, she investigates what seems to be a real oxymoron of the movement: its simultaneous claim to the ephemeral and its compulsive writing of its own history. In this way, Dada Presentism also interrogates the limits between history and fiction." --> na ov. - Bibliografija: str. 95-104. - Kazalo

THEA, Carolee
On curating 2 : paradigm shifts : interviews with fourteen international curators / interviews by Carolee Thea ; Nancy Adajania, Wassan Al-Kudhairi, David Elliott, Mami Kataoka, Sunjung Kim, Koyo Kouoh, Carol Yinghua Lu, Gerardo Mosquera, Ugochukwu-Smooth Nzewi, Jack Persekian, José Roca, Bisi Silva, Alia Swastika, WHW ; edited by Carolee Thea and Thomas Micchelli ; foreword by Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev. - New York : D.A.P./Distributed Art Publishers, cop. 2016. - 135 str. : ilustr. ; 25 cm

"On Curating 2, Carolee Thea's new volume of interviews with 14 of today's leading curators, explores the lively system of art biennials that is thriving around the world - particularly outside Europe and America. Spawned by their more formal Western predecessors and motivated by the forces of history and politics, the newer incarnations of the biennial often occur in the cities of the postcolonial world and the Global South, as well as in former socialist countries. The new generation of curators who are organizing these surprisingly provocative and experimental exhibitions hail from cities as diverse as Bogotá, Dakar, Havana, Jakarta, Jerusalem, Lagos, Mumbai, Seoul and Zagreb, and they are the subjects of the interviews collected in this book." --> na zavihku ov.
