Marko Batista: Chem:Sys:Reaktor

Sound installation, 2012

The CHEM:SYS:REAKTOR project is based on the analysis of the acoustics of space as a signpost for designing sound while taking into account the “site-specific” conditions. The author explores perception through physical properties of electronic sound in relation to the environment in which it is created, by means of which he wishes to inform the visitor about the aesthetics of the so-called “space sound”. The sound sculpture, like a frequency generator, is comprised of modules – temporary sound systems. Through experimental electro-chemical levers, these systems form a hybrid electro-acoustic whole as a rhizomatic sound system, which maps the architecture of sound in space. Electric impulses travel through a series of fluid substances and combine into sound stimuli. The sculpture emits a dynamic frequency selection of waves, which change with regard to the oscillation of value between electricity and chemical processes of the present reagents, through which the system is becoming a living organism. In so doing, the author makes possible random options for ever new configurations of the event, established on the basis of electric impulses and sound perception in space.

In a rhizomatic system, which operates without the author and lives its own life, the synthesis of sound in space becomes a political subject, which moves away from hierarchical structures of sound compositions. When sound is divorced from the origin and travels through space, the viewer, who is exposed to the trajectory of sounds, gains information about the interconnectedness of sound contents because, through movement, the viewer simultaneously perceives sounds that are aimed in different directions. The visitor becomes part of the architecture, an interspace and a barrier, within which he finds himself in the position of an acoustic element in the journey of sound through space.
