On International Migrants Day on Thursday 20 June 2019, Moderna galerija is organizing three events related to the exhibition Southern Constellations: The Poetics of the Non-Aligned at the Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova. On the Summer Night of the Museums, 15 June 2019Games without Frontiers were organized in the museum plaza, where children learned about games called different names in different parts of the world (memory, hopscotch/teley, teley, macala/gebeta) under the mentorship of Markos Teklu, as well as juggling and making paper kites.

At the same time the first of the MIGRANTOURS was organized in collaboration with Terra Vera. Entitled Arabic Journey and conducted in Slovene and English, the tour started outside the Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova, where the guides Heba Kanoun (Syria), Aber Algendy (Syria), Wasim Alkhatib (Palestine/ Jordan) presented their views of the exhibition and the Non-Aligned Movement. The tour continued across the museum plaza to the Asylum Center on Kotnikova Street, then on to Trubarjeva Street, with stops at the multicultural spots (Skuhna, House of Spices, Lebanese meze, Falafel) opened by (mostly Arab) migrants. After tastings of different spices and exchanging experiences the tour ended on Dragon Bridge.

On Thursday, 20 June 2019 between 8 and 8 p.m. the second tour in this series is being organized. The 2.5 kilometer long Sensory Journey, guided by Camilo Acosta Mendoza (Colombia), will take us from Marko Pogačnik’s Hologram of Europe across the museum plaza with a stop at the +Kantina MSUM to the town center.

We will undertake a sensory journey not only through times and spaces but also through stories, tastes, colors, forms and sounds, realizing that from the beginning of times we are in constant migration. Using creative performative techniques they will slow down the pace of the city and explore the metamorphosis through time, feeling the evolution from swamp to modern European capital.

The tour will be in English and Spanish or French.

On Saturday, 22 June 2019 between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., the Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova will host a creative workshop Animals World. It is aimed at mothers with little children who seldom engage in activities outside the Asylum Center. The workshop is based on animal stories from various cultural backgrounds. The stories will be recreated by children and their parents; they will make animals in various media and then animate them with the help of mentors.

These events are organized as part of the European project New Mappings of Europe, coordinated by Moderna galerija and involving three art and cultural institutions from Serbia, Austria and the UK, Muzej istorije Jugoslavije from Belgrade, Akademie der bildenden Künste from Vienna and the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (Mima). This year we are again organizing simultaneous events in Ljubljana, Vienna, Middlesbrough and Belgrade on International Migrants Day. Also +Kantina MSUM, the coffee shop in the Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova that enables alternative economies and allows migrants to use their knowledge, create a social network and exchange ideas in the broader Metelkova area, is involved in celebrating International Migrants Day.
