EXHIBITION FROM THE COLLECTIONS | 20th Century. Continuities and Ruptures

A selection of works from the national collection of Moderna galerija.

The exhibition breaks with traditional linearity by introducing the topics of the 20th century avant-gardes and of the art of the Partisan resistance, bringing them into the national history of art on an equal footing with more familiar trends and, as a consequence, casting new light on the latter.

EXHIBITION FROM THE COLLECTIONS | Points in time 1889–1991

A circular timeline with a selection of works that are an addition to and continuation of the permanent exhibition 20th Century. Continuities and Ruptures and a guide to same.

THE EIGHTIES | The Heritage of 1989. Case Study: The Second Yugoslav Documents Exhibition

The Heritage of 1989 focuses on the largest of the exhibitions that include the adjective “Yugoslav” in their titles, i.e. exhibitions that contributed to building a common Yugoslav cultural space. It attempts to reconsider the idea of the commons from the vantage point of it being something inherently conflicted that in the time of socialist Yugoslavia, in an atmosphere of multiculturalism and collectivity, nonetheless stimulated the ability of social connectivity and solidarity.

JUSUF HADŽIFEJZOVIĆ | Depotgraphy

Jusuf Hadžifejzović began his career as a painter, but since as far back as the 1970s, his main focus has been on performance and a special type of practice, based on an almost “archeological” investigation of depots: he has been collecting the stored items and depositing them again, rearranged, in the form of installations in the exhibition space.

Mladina 1980s

The display presents a selection of front covers of the controversial Slovene weekly Mladina, designed by design collectives and individual designers, and a number of key articles that well represent the politically, socially, and culturally turbulent period of the second half of the 1980s, especially between 1987 and 1989. That was also the time when Mladina became known as a periodical of radical and creative form and content, with its liberal openness and critical approach.

MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART METELKOVA

Saturday, 17 June 2017, 6 p.m. – Midnight

ON VIEW:

EXHIBITION FROM THE COLLECTIONS | Low Budget Utopias – Second Recycling

The exhibition presents works that come largely from the Moderna galerija’s Arteast 2000+ Collection. This is the eighth installation of the collection in which we develop the notion of the collection as a tool. In the present exhibition we explain the collection and the museum as tools that help to sustain a utopian consciousness.

The Lives of Monuments

The documentary exhibition about monuments related to World War II and erected in Slovenia at the time of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia was developed at the seminar “Art for Collective Use” at the Department of Art History of the University of Ljubljana, in cooperation with the Moderna galerija. The title of the seminar should be indicative – it should guide students towards the art placed in public space, intended for the broader public and common use, and created in complex co-authorship.

Józef Robakowski, Market, 1970

Projection of a film from the Moderna galerija’s Arteast 2000+ Collection

Józef Robakowski is truly a jack of all trades in contemporary art. He lives and works in Łódź, Poland as an academy professor and theoritician, while making films, photographic series, installations, drawings, objects, and conceptual projects. In 1970 he co-organized the Film Form Workshop . Market was the first film created at this workshop, and in it  Robakowski attempts to analyse the mechanism by which illusion and reality are created in cinema. He undertakes an experiment using technology from that era, filming  Łódź's Red Market with an unusual frame rate.

COMMENTARY #6 | Vesna Bukovec | Safety for Whom?

With the excuse of safeguarding its citizens and property, Slovenia is increasingly becoming a police state. The power of the repressive apparatus has been growing since the 2012/13 protests. In 2015 and 2016, the state was responsible for the refugee crisis turning into a humanitarian tragedy. The state has given the army police powers, while the police recently acquired a new water cannon, the use of stun guns is being discussed, and city wardens have increasing authority to take action.

PROGRAMME:

18.00 Opening of the student exhibition, curated by the students from the Department of Art History of the University of Ljubljana.

18.00 22.00 Unknown heroe(s), workshop for all generations

The workshop is based on the idea of many public monuments , which were erected in the past for different purposes.

Each era admires its own heroes - brave, famous, fearless, unselfish, legendary,.....Who are the heroes of today? How do they act and how do we worship them?  At the exhibition tour we will search for the almost forgotten monuments from the ancient times and at the workshop we will make installations dedicated to our own (contemporary) heroes.
