Miki Muster (Murska Sobota, 1925) is the pioneer of comic strips in Slovenia and one of the most successful comic strip and animated cartoon artists. Staged to celebrate his ninetieth anniversary, the exhibition presents an overview of his copious oeuvre of comic strips, picture books, animated cartoons, commercials, caricatures, and sculptures, marked by technical perfection and variety of content. Although he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana with a degree in sculpture, Muster found he was more drawn to drawing. Over the years, his drawing changed, growing more sophisticated, just as his characters evolved and gained more facets and features. In the 1950s and 1960s, Muster’s comic strip characters Zvitorepec, Trdonja and Lakotnik were featured in the newspaper Slovenski poročevalec. His desire to explore the medium of animated cartoon took him to Munich, where he began drawing a series of animated films for Bavaria Film in 1973. His meeting with humorist and caricaturist Guillermo Mordillo in the mid-1970s led to a series of 400 animated cartoon films in a total of almost 400 minutes. The series was widely acclaimed and shown virtually worldwide. The Muster-Mordillo cartoons were bought by television studios in thirty countries. Muster was equally successful with his films about Nick Knatterton, based on the eponymous comic strip by Manfred Schmidt. Miki Muster stayed in Germany until 1990. His production after 1967 is also notable for commercial ads and political caricature.
