IN MEMORIAM | GORAZD ŠEFRAN (1942 – 2022)

GORAZD ŠEFRAN (1942–2022)

Printmaker Gorazd Šefran has passed away. He graduated from the Ljubljana Academy of Fine Arts with a degree in painting, but then dedicated himself to printmaking after completing postgraduate studies under Prof. Riko Debenjak (1970). Mastering his métier in detail, his preferred printmaking processes were traditional: lithography, etching, drypoint, aquatint, mezzotint. He exhibited his early works in the circle of expressive figurative artists, but as he matured, his color range became subdued, the figures wrapped in drapery, fusing with nature, leading viewers into a world of premonitions.

As a young artist, he received the Golden Bird Award in 1972. In 1973, he had a solo exhibition in Moderna galerija as part of a series of presentations of fresh trends in fine art entitled Studio ’73; this was followed by two other solo shows (in 1979 and 1982) in Mala galerija, Moderna galerija’s outstation exhibition venue at the time. In 1973 he started teaching at the Secondary School of Design and Photography. He rarely exhibited his works at solo exhibitions; they were, however, included in International Exhibitions of Graphic Art in Ljubljana between 1971 and 1999 and in numerous traveling exhibitions of prints organized by Moderna galerija in the 1970s and 1980s.
