Newsreel 55 is a composition of quotes, archive footage and recordings of current events, spatially linked to the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, with an emphasis on the city of Maribor, the third largest industrial center. The presented content raises questions in regards to social and political movements in the 20th century, which determined the economic, political and social dynamics of the city. The occupied city, the city of industrialisation and de-industrialisation, the city marked by the collapse of the common state, war and crisis. These are periods presented through the eyes of a generation that grew up at the turn of two systems. The authors were interested in how to agitate the image, its power and its effects, and address the issues of class struggle today.
Newsreel 55 is a collective work, agitated, edited and composed by Nika Autor, Marko Bratina, Ciril Oberstar and Jurij Meden.
Newsreel 55 premiered at the Slovenian Cinematheque at the end of September 2013 as part of the 7th Triennial of Contemporary Art in Slovenia – U3.
