Javier Arce (1973) exhibits his works in Slovenia for the first time.
His series "Estrujados" (Crushed) presents reproductions from different periods of art history, which he draws with a black felt-tip pen on a hard, almost non tearable paper. Once the drawing is made, he creases the paper and spreads it out again. Now this work of art is ready to be exhibited. For "This could be an exhibition of historical importance" the author chose Picasso's Guernica, Delacroix's Liberty Leading the People, Goya's The Disasters of War, modified Goya's works created by the Chapman brothers and for the first time the Croatian artist Braco Dimitrijević and his plaque This Could be a Place of Historical Importance.
It seems that he chose the above mentioned works of art because they speak of particular moments in the past, the turning points, and of people in extreme situations that, due to artistic depictions, have become historical moments.
He also examines the importance of these works in the present and how the context in which they are found today has changed since they were created. Likewise, he is interested in seeing whether the so called high culture can adjust to the ever stronger invasion of the popular culture in everyday life.
