Maruša Šuštar

Game of Unconscious (Red Moon Carpet)

2013, oil on canvas, 160 x 190 cm

Maruša Šuštar brings together considerations of the abstract color field and the figurativeness of tiny human figures seen from a bird’s eye view that allusively transform the pictorial field into an image of a landscape seen from above. And indeed, some of Šuštar’s works are based on real or imaginary maps or satellite images of the Earth. They seem like distant scenes, lunar landscapes or deserts, made into images of our world by the swarming human figures. The ant-like scuttling of the tiny people on the canvas acts like a metaphor for the chaos and aimlessness of existence.
