Arjan Pregl

From the Carnival series

2018, oil on canvas (6 paintings: 120 x 100 cm; 3 paintings: 80 x 60 cm)

In his work, Arjan Pregl often plays with images taken from the reservoir of our collective imagery, most often from the Internet, and gives them new meanings in often humorous twists and turns, although the images always address some common neuralgic points of our sociopolitical reality. His topical commentaries of our time, such as his Carnival series addressing fluid, exchangeable identities and the easy construction of identity, express with artistic means references to painting as a medium and to its contradictory modernist trait of self-reference (impasto, visible brushwork or traces of the palette knife, gesturalness, dripping…).

Arjan Pregl graduated at the Academy of Fine Arts, Ljubljana in 1998, under the mentorship of Metka Krašovec and Bojan Gorenec. In 2001 he earned his Master's degree in painting at the same academy under the mentorship of Bojan Gorenec. He attended the Indiana University of Pennsylvania (USA) during his final semester. After that, he enrolled in the post-graduate course in printmaking and completed it in 2004 under the mentorship of Lojze Logar. He is active as a painter, printmaker, illustrator, designer, and writer.
