The series of small-scale exhibitions entitled From the Studio of… presents cross-section views of recent production by artists whose works are included in the Moderna galerija’s permanent exhibition 20th Century. Continuities and Ruptures. This year the series continues with a presentation of Dušan Kirbiš, who is featured in the permanent display in the section dedicated to the art of the 1980s with Truth Beyond the Visible (1988, acrylic on canvas).
Kirbiš’s exhibition foregrounds the artist’s characteristic explorations of painting as a medium and the possibilities of going out and beyond it. Like the previous exhibitions in the series, this one is a result of close collaboration between the artist and the curator Marko Jenko, PhD.
Dušan Kirbiš (1953) attended the Teachers’ College in Maribor (1971–1973) and then went on to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana (1973–1978), graduating in 1978. He also pursued postgraduate studies in painting and printmaking in Ljubljana (1978–1982). In 1980, he was granted the status of a freelance artist. He pursued further studies at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin (1986–1988) on a DAAD grant, and went to study and work in New York in 1990.
In 1990 Kirbiš was appointed Associate Professor at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering in Ljubljana, and Full Professor in the field of art theory and color studies in 2000. Currently he still teaches at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering at the University of Ljubljana. His work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions at home and abroad, and he has won several awards and prizes, and Slovene and international grants.
