You are kindly invited to attend the presentation of recent Russian art to be delivered by the renowned art theoretician and philosopher Boris Groys on Saturday, 10 March at 6 p.m. at the MSUM.

Boris Groys' coming to Ljubljana is organized jointly with EPK. We would therefore like to call your attention also to the lecture Groys is delivering as part of the project Dvanajst on Friday, 9 March at 7 p.m. at the Kazinska dvorana SNG Maribor. (www.maribor2012.eu).

Boris Groys is a philosopher, essayist, art critic, media theorist, and an internationally acclaimed expert on late-Soviet postmodern art and literature, as well as on the Russian avant-garde. Born in [East] Berlin in 1947, Groys studied philosophy and mathematics at the University of Leningrad from 1965 to 1971. Then, from 1971 to 1976, he worked as a research assistant at various institutes in Leningrad and from 1976 to 1981 he was employed at the Institute for Structural and Applied Linguistics at the University of Moscow. In 1981 Groys emigrated from the former USSR and went to Germany.

Currently, Groys is Professor of Aesthetics, Art History, and Media Theory at the Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe and Global Distinguished Professor at New York University. He is the author of many books, including The Total Art of Stalinism, Ilya Kabakov: The Man Who Flew into Space from His Apartment, Art Power, The Communist Postscript, and, most recently, Going Public.

Groys curated the Russian Pavilion at the 2011 Venice Biennale, presenting Andrei Monastirskiy, the driving force of the informal group dubbed the Moscow Conceptualists, and the group Collective Actions.

Boris Groys has worked with the Moderna galerija before. In 2001 he was the curator of The Art Judgment Show at the Mala galerija, and in 2007 an adviser at the Conceptual Art of Eastern Europe project.

At the MSUM he will give a presentation of recent Russian art, which represents the wider context for the Russian artists included in Moderna galerija?s international Arteast 2000+ collection (among others Ilya Kabakov, Andrei Monastirsky, Komar & Melamid, Vladimir Kuprianov, Oleg Kulik, Dmitri Prigov, Yuri Albert, and Yuri Leiderman).
