DNA (Das Neue Alphabet / The New Alphabet)

DNA (Das Neue Alphabet / The New Alphabet) is a book series published by Spector Books, developed as part of the artistic and research project of the same name at Berlin’s Haus der Kulturen der Welt. Through exhibitions, music, literature and collective research, the project raised the question of how to create and share knowledge without subordinating diverse languages, cultures and experiences to a single universal system.
The series develops these questions at the intersection of art and critical theory, examining how images, languages, bodies and codes shape our understanding of the world. It brings together artistic approaches and essays on the political history of images, embodiment, archives and music. Its experimental character is also reflected in Olaf Nicolai’s design, which brings letters, colours and cover folds into shifting combinations, opening up different ways of connecting the individual books.
