On Wednesday, 25 November, at 6 pm, we warmly invite you to the auditorium of the Museum of Modern Art (MG+) for a round table dedicated to the life and art of Gregor Perušek, held as part of the accompanying programme of the exhibition The Enigmatic Gregor Perušek.
Participants: Breda Ilich Klančnik, Mirjam Milharčič Hladnik, Irene Mislej, Joseph Valencic
Moderator: Robert Simonišek
The participants will discuss the life, artistic practice and reception of the work of Slovenian-American painter Gregor Perušek, who was active between the two world wars, dividing his time between Chicago, Cleveland, travels across numerous US states and his homeland, which he visited in 1929. They will explore issues and dilemmas concerning the Slovenian immigrant community in the United States, within which the artist worked during the last decade of his life, as well as approaches to acquiring museum material and the significance of this extensive exhibition for Slovenian and American scholarship. The discussion will also consider these questions in relation to American history and the trends in modern art that influenced Perušek’s visual language and shaped his broader outlook on society and the world.
Before the event, a public guided tour of the exhibition will take place at 5 pm, led by curator Robert Simonišek.
