ADAMSON, Glenn
Art in the making : from paint to crowdsourcing / Glenn Adamson and Julia Bryan-Wilson. - London : Thames & Hudson, 2016. - 247 str. : ilustr. ; 24 cm

"Today's artists have an unprecedented level of choice with regard to materials and methods available to them, yet the processes involved in making artworks are rarely addressed in books or exhibitions on art. Here, Glenn Adamson and Julia Bryan-Wilson argue that the materials and methods used to make artworks hold the key to artists' motivations, their attitudes to authorship, uniqueness and the value of objects, the economic and social contexts from which they emerge, and their approach to the perceived opposition between materiality and conceptualism in art. The book's introduction sets out a history of trends in artistic production and the possible catalysts for the proliferation of production strategies since the mid-twentieth century, followed by nine chapters that explore different methods and media. Detailed examples are interwoven with the discussion, including visuals that reveal the intricacies of each technique or material and its overall effect when presented as an artwork. Artists featured include Ai Weiwei, Ron Arad, Chris Burden, Katharina Fritsch, Isa Genzken, Jeff Koons, Los Carpinteros, Haroon Mirza, Takashi Murakami, Gerhard Richter, Doris Salcedo and Santiago Sierra." --> na ov. - Bibliografija: str. 236-237. - Kazalo

The ARTIST and his critic stripped bare : the correspondence of Marcel Duchamp and Robert Lebel / edited and translated by Paul B. Franklin ; with a foreword by Jean-Jacques Lebel. - Los Angeles : Getty Research Institute, cop. 2016. - XV, 401 str. : ilustr. ; 23 cm

Vzpor. franc. in angl. besedilo. - Biografija: str. 342-364, 365-388. - "Robert Lebel, French writer and art critic, was instrumental in rendering Marcel Duchamp's often hermetic life, art, and ideas accessible to a wider public across Europe and the United States, principally with his 1959 publication Sur Marcel Duchamp, the first monograph and catalogue raisonné devoted to the artist. Duchamp was a willing partner in the book's creation. In fact, his active participation in both its conception and layout was so substantial that the book is considered part of the artist's oeuvre. But the project took six years to complete. The trials, tribulations, quarrels, and machinations that plagued the production, publication, and publicity of Sur Marcel Duchamp are the focus of this correspondence between two lifelong friends. Translated and printed in full together for the first time, and including the original French texts, these letters, postcards, and telegrams from the collection of the Getty Research Institute offer uncensored access to the evolution of the relationship between Lebel and Duchamp from December 1946 to April 1967. They provide valuable information about their daily activities as well as those of friends and colleagues, vital details concerning their various collective projects, and illuminating insights into their thinking about art and life. These documents, witty and sincere, bear witness to the art of friendship and a friendship in art." --> na ov. - Selected bibliography: str. 389-392. - Kazalo

ASHER, Michael, 1943-2012
Michael Asher / edited by Jennifer King ; essays and an interview by Barbara Munger, Sandy Ballatore, Benjamin H. D. Buchloh, Michael Asher, Anne Rorimer, Birgit Pelzer, Allan Sekula, Stephan Pascher, Jennifer King and Miwon Kwon. - Cambridge (Mass.) ; London : The MIT Press, cop. 2016. - XI, 181 str. : ilustr. ; 23 cm. - (October files ; 19)

"During a career that spanned more than forty years, from the late 1960s until his death in 2012, Michael Asher created site-specific installations and institutional interventions that examined the conditions of art's production, display, and reception. At the Art Institute of Chicago, for example, he famously relocated a bronze replica of an eighteenth-century sculpture of George Washington from the museum's entrance to an interior gallery, thereby highlighting the disjunction between the statue's symbolic function as a public monument and its aesthetic origins as an artwork. Today, Asher is celebrated as one of the forerunners of institutional critique. Yet because of Asher's situation-based method of working, and his resistance to making objects that could circulate in the art market, few of his works survive in physical form. What does survive is writing by scholars and critics about his diverse practice. The essays in this volume document projects that range from Asher's environmental works and museum displacements to his research-based presentations and reflections on urban space." --> na ov. - Bibliografija pri posameznih prispevkih. - Kazalo

The CURATORIAL conundrum : what to study? what to research? what to practice? / edited by Paul O'Neill, Mick Wilson, Lucy Steeds. - Cambridge (Mass.) ; London : The MIT Press ; Annandale-on-Hudson : Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College ; Feldmeilen : LUMA Foundation, cop. 2016. - 263 str. : ilustr. ; 27 cm

"Today curators are sometimes more famous than the artists whose work they curate, and curatorship involves more than choosing objects for an exhibition. The expansion of the curatorial field in recent decades has raised questions about exhibition-making itself and the politics of production, display, and distribution. The Curatorial Conundrum looks at the burgeoning field of curatorship and tries to imagine its future. Indeed, practitioners and theorists consider a variety of futures: the future of curatorial education; the future of curatorial research; the future of curatorial and artistic practice; and the institutions that will make these other futures possible. The contributors examine the proliferation of graduate programs in curatorial studies over the last twenty years, and consider what can be taught without giving up what is precisely curatorial, within the ever-expanding parameters of curatorial practice in recent times. They discuss curating as collaborative research, asking what happens when exhibition operates as a mode of research in its own right. They explore curatorial practice as an exercise in questioning the world around us; and they speculate about what it will take to build new, innovative, and progressive curatorial research institutions. EICHHORN, Kate
Adjusted margin : xerography, art, and activism in the late twentieth century / Kate Eichhorn. - Cambridge (Mass.) ; London : The MIT Press, 2016. - XI, 201 str. : ilustr. ; 23 cm

"This is the story of how the xerographic copier, or "Xerox machine," became a creative medium for artists and activists during the last few decades of the twentieth century. Paper jams, mangled pages, and even fires made early versions of this clunky office machine a source of fear, rage, dread, and disappointment. But eventually, xerography democratized print culture by making it convenient and affordable for renegade publishers, zinesters, artists, punks, anarchists, queers, feminists, street activists, and others to publish their work and to get their messages out on the street. The xerographic copier adjusted the lived and imagined margins of society, Eichhorn argues, by supporting artistic and political expression and mobilizing subcultural movements. Eichhorn describes early efforts to use xerography to create art and the occasional scapegoating of urban copy shops and xerographic technologies following political panics, using the post-9/11 raid on a Toronto copy shop as her central example. She examines New York's downtown art and punk scenes of the 1970s to 1990s, arguing that xerography -- including photocopied posters, mail art, and zines -- changed what cities looked like and how we experienced them. And she looks at how a generation of activists and artists deployed the copy machine in AIDS and queer activism while simultaneously introducing the copy machine's gritty, DIY aesthetics into international art markets. Xerographic copy machines are now defunct. Office copiers are digital, and activists rely on social media more than photocopied posters. And yet, Eichhorn argues, even though we now live in a post-xerographic era, the grassroots aesthetics and political legacy of xerography persists." --> na zavihku ščitnega ov. - Bibliografija: str. 187-196. - Kazalo

FOWKES, Maja
The green bloc : neo-avant-garde art and ecology under socialism / Maja Fowkes. - Budapest ; New York : Central European University Press, 2015. - VIII, 299 str. : ilustr. ; 23 cm

"Expanding the horizon of accounts of art under communism, The Green Bloc uncovers the history of artistic engagement with the natural environment in the Eastern Bloc. The book focusses on artists including the Pecs Workshop from Hungary, OHO in Slovenia, TOK in Croatia, Rudolf Sikora in Slovakia, and the Czech artist Petr Stembera, Fowkes's research brings to light an array of distinctive approaches to nature, from attempts to raise environmental awareness among citizens to the exploration of non-anthropocentric positions and the quest for cosmological existence in the midst of red ideology. The study deals with the specific historical period of the early 1970s in the light of the changes in cultural spheres brought by the social and political upheavals and disturbances of 1968, recognizing the more systematic appearance of art practice in the natural environment, as well as art's engagement with environmental problems. Embedding artistic production in social, political, and environmental histories of the region, this book reveals the artists' sophisticated relationship to nature, at the precise moment when ecological crisis was first apprehended on a planetary scale." --> na ov. - Bibliografija: str. 265-284. - Kazalo

KIEFER, Anselm
Anselm Kiefer : a monograph / [text] Dominique Baqué ; [translated from the French by David H. Wilson]. - London : Thames & Hudson, 2015. - 303 str. : ilustr. ; 32 cm

Prevod dela: Anselm Kiefer : entre mythe et concept. - "The work of Anselm Kiefer begins with a crucial question. How, after the Holocaust, can one be an artist within the German tradition? Born at the end of the Second World War, Kiefer's career represents a quasi-existential quest to redefine Germanness. This new monograph will examine the foundation of Kiefer's work: memory and our response to it. Kiefer's work is informed by great literary works, myths, tales and legends, and particularly the world of Kabbalistic mysticism. This book explores his passion for alchemy, his admiration for great female figures obscured by history, and his relationship with the landscape and nature, a notable topic of his most recent works. Steeped in culture, Kiefer mixes many forms and media. The 'total work of art' has characterized his work for more than four decades. Art historian Dominique Baque highlights an aspect of Kiefer's work here that has received very little critical attention before now: his conceptual understanding of the book and photography. She also considers the often overlooked performance element of his work, starting with his first 'actions' from the end of the 1960s." --> na ščitnem ov. - Bibliografija: str. 297-302. - Kazalo

MAN Ray
Writings on art / Man Ray ; edited by Jennifer Mundy ; with Andrew Strauss and Edouard Sebline, consulting editors. - London : Tate Publishing ; Los Angeles : The Getty Research Institute, 2016. - XV, 456 str. : ilustr. ; 26 cm

"Man Ray (1890-1976), a pioneer of the Dada movement and a central protagonist of surrealism, is best known for his innovative photographs, but his writings are also remarkable expressions of his identity as an artist. The first extensive collection of Man Ray's texts about art in English, Man Ray: Writings on Art illuminates the diverse ways in which the artist used words to express his aesthetic, philosophical and political ideas. Richly illustrated and drawing on a broad range of materials, including artists' books, essays, interviews, letters and visual poems, this collection presents the artist's most significant writings about art, many of them never previously published. Offering a long overdue vision of Man Ray as someone who used words both as a creative medium and as a means of articulating ideas about the nature and value of art, it provides a powerful insight for students and scholars of modern art, as well as for artists, photographers and all those who count themselves as Man Ray fans." --> na ščitnem ov. - Kazalo

MASS effect : art and the internet in the twenty-first century / edited by Lauren Cornell and Ed Halter. - Cambridge (Mass.) ; London : The MIT Press, cop. 2015. - XXXIV, 494 str. : ilustr. ; 25 cm. - (Critical anthologies in art and culture)

"Since the turn of the millennium, the Internet has evolved from what was merely a new medium to a true mass medium -- with a deeper and wider cultural reach, greater opportunities for distribution and collaboration, and more complex corporate and political realities. Mapping a loosely chronological series of formative arguments, developments, and happenings, Mass Effect provides an essential guide to understanding the dynamic and ongoing relationship between art and new technologies. Mass Effect brings together nearly forty contributions, including newly commissioned essays and reprints, image portfolios, and transcribed discussion panels and lectures that offer insights and reflections from a wide range of artists, curators, art historians, and bloggers. Among the topics examined are the use of commercial platforms for art practice, what art means in an age of increasing surveillance, and questions surrounding such recent concepts as "postinternet." PAPASTERGIADIS, Nikos
Cosmopolitanism and culture / Nikos Papastergiadis. - Cambridge ; Malden (Mass.) : Polity Press, 2012. - VII, 229 str. ; 23 cm

"Today, more than at any other point in history, we are aware of the cultural impact of global processes. This has created new possibilities for the development of a cosmopolitan culture but, at the same time, it has created new risks and anxieties linked to immigration and the accommodation of strangers. This book examines how the images of the terrorist and the refugee, by being dispersed across almost all aspects of social life, have resulted in the production of 'ambient fears', and it explores the role of artists in reclaiming the conditions of hospitality. Since 9/11 contemporary artists have confronted the issues of globalization by creating situations in which strangers can enter into dialogue with each other, collaborating with diverse networks to forms new platforms for global knowledge. Such knowledge does not depend upon the old model of establishing a supposedly objective and therefore universal framework, but on the capacity to recognize, and mutually negotiate, situated differences. From artworks that incorporate new media techniques to collective activism Papastergiadis claims that there is a new cosmopolitan imaginary that challenges the conventional divide between art and politics. Through the analysis of artistic practices across the globe this book extends the debates on culture and cosmopolitanism from the ethics of living with strangers to the aesthetics of imagining alternative visions of the world. Timely and wide-ranging, this book will be essential reading for students and scholars in sociology and cultural studies and will be of interest to anyone concerned with the changing forms of art and culture in our contemporary global age." --> na ov. - Bibliografija: str. 206-225. - Kazalo

Made in Los Angeles : materials, processes, and the birth of West Coast Minimalism / Rachel Rivenc. - Los Angeles : Getty Conservation Institute, cop. 2016. - XIII, 193 str. : ilustr. ; 26 cm

Nasl. raztegnjen čez dve str. - "In the 1960s, a group of Los Angeles artists fashioned a body of work that has come to be known as the "LA Look" or West Coast Minimalism. Its distinct aesthetic is characterized by clean lines, simple shapes, and pristine reflective or translucent surfaces, and often by the use of bright, seductive colors. This volume, the first to provide a detailed study of the role of materials and processes in the advent of these truly indigenous Los Angeles art forms, focuses on four pioneering artists whose approach, often borrowed from other industries, featured the use of synthetic paints and resins as well as industrial processes to create objects that are both painting and sculpture. The author uses the methods of technical art history to inform her investigation of conservation issues associated with their work, thereby illuminating challenges facing the conservation of contemporary art in general." --> na ov. - Bibliografija: str. 181-187. - Kazalo

SILVERMAN, Kaja
The miracle of analogy : or the history of photography, part 1 / Kaja Silverman. - Stanford : Stanford University Press, cop. 2015. - 203 str., [24] str. pril. : ilustr. ; 26 cm

"The Miracle of Analogy is the first of a two-volume reconceptualization of photography. It argues that photography originates in what is seen, rather than in the human eye or the camera lens, and that it is the world's primary way of revealing itself to us. Neither an index, representation, nor copy, as conventional studies would have it, the photographic image is an analogy. This principle obtains at every level of its being: a photograph analogizes its referent, the negative from which it is generated, every other print that is struck from that negative, and all of its digital "offspring." Photography is also unstoppably developmental, both at the level of the individual image and of medium. The photograph moves through time, in search of other "kin," some of which may be visual, but others of which may be literary, architectural, philosophical, or literary. Finally, photography develops with us, and in response to us. It assumes historically legible forms, but when we divest them of their saving power, as we always seem to do, it goes elsewhere. The present volume focuses on the nineteenth century and some of its contemporary progeny. It begins with the camera obscura, which morphed into chemical photography and lives on in digital form, and ends with Walter Benjamin. Key figures discussed along the way include Nicephore Niepce, Louis Daguerre, William Fox-Talbot, Jeff Wall, and Joan Fontcuberta." --> na ov. - Bibliografija: str. 187-195. - Kazalo

SLOTERDIJK, Peter
Selected exaggerations : conversations and interviews, 1993-2012 / Peter Sloterdijk ; edited by Bernhard Klein ; translated by Karen Margolis. - Malden (Mass.) ; Cambridge : Polity Press, cop. 2016. - XXI, 328 str. ; 23 cm

Prevod dela: Ausgewählte Übertreibungen. Gespräche und Interviews 1993-2012. - "Peter Sloterdijk s reputation as one of the most original thinkers of our time has grown steadily since the early 1980s. This volume of over thirty conversations and interviews spanning two decades illuminates the multiple interconnections of his life and work. In these wide-ranging dialogues Sloterdijk gives his views on a variety of topics, from doping to doxa, design to dogma, media to mobility and the financial crisis to football. Here we encounter Sloterdijk from every angle: as he expounds his ideas on the philosophical tradition and the latest strands of contemporary thought, as he analyses the problems of our age and as he provides a new and startling perspective on everyday events. Through exaggeration, Sloterdijk draws our attention to crucial issues and controversies and makes us aware of their implications for society and the individual. Always eager to share his knowledge and erudition, he reveals himself equally at home in ancient Babylon, in the channels of the mass media and on the ethical and moral terrain of religion, education or genetic engineering. Appealing both to the seasoned reader of Sloterdijk and to the curious newcomer, these dialogues offer fresh insight into the intellectual and political events of recent decades. They also give us glimpses of Sloterdijk s own life story, from his early passionate love of reading and writing to his journeys in East and West, his commitment to Europe and his acceptance and enjoyment of the role of a public intellectual and philosopher in the twenty-first century." --> na ov.

The SURREALISM reader : an anthology of ideas / edited by Dawn Ades and Michael Richardson ; with Krzysztof Fijalkowski. - London : Tate Publishing, 2015. - 368 str. : ilustr. ; 24 cm

Biografije: str. 330-345. - "The Surrealism Reader is the latest in a successful series of critical anthologies that have become essential touchstones for students, scholars and all those interested in art history. Surrealism is one of the most influential cultural movements of the twentieth century. While its contribution to the art and literature of the century is well known, its relation to the development of intellectual ideas has only recently become a matter of serious investigation. This book details the surrealist engagement with major themes in the intellectual history of the twentieth century. It draws together essays from the whole history of surrealism to illustrate the tenacity and consistency with which the surrealists treated themes of psychological reality and the construction of identity, cultural communication, freedom and poetry. Drawn mostly from French and Spanish surrealist journals, the collection gathers together a wide range of texts dating from the 1920s up to the late 1990s, none of which has ever been translated into English before. The Reader features writings by leading surrealists, including Aragon, Artaud, Bataille, Breton, Caillois, Crevel, Dalí, Eluard, Mabille, Magritte, Morise and Tzara. It also serves as an introduction to major writers in surrealism whose work is largely unknown to English readers, such as Georges Henein, René Alleau, Gérard Legrand and Annie Le Brun. Giving space to the many different voices that made up the movement, and placing them within a clear and coherent historical framework, the Reader will be an essential reference for all those interested in the central place of surrealism within twentieth century culture." --> na ov. - Bibliografija: str. 355-357. - Kazalo

WHAT is a people? / Judith Butler, Georges Didi-Huberman, Pierre Bourdieu, Alain Badiou, Sadri Khiari and Jacques Rancière ; introduction by Bruno Bosteels ; and conclusion by Kevin Olson ; translated by Jody Gladding. - New York : Columbia University Press, 2016. - VII, 164 str. ; 22 cm. - (New directions in critical theory)

Prevod dela: Qu'est-ce qu'un peuple?. - "What Is a People? seeks to reclaim "people" as an effective political concept by revisiting its uses and abuses over time. Alain Badiou surveys the idea of a people as a productive force of solidarity and emancipation and as a negative tool of categorization and suppression. Pierre Bourdieu follows with a sociolinguistic analysis of "popular" and its transformation of democracy, beliefs, songs, and even soups into phenomena with outsized importance. Judith Butler calls out those who use freedom of assembly to create an exclusionary "we," while Georges Didi-Huberman addresses the problem of summing up a people with totalizing narratives. Sadri Khiari applies an activist's perspective to the racial hierarchies inherent in ethnic and national categories, and Jacques Rancière comments on the futility of isolating theories of populism when, as these thinkers have shown, the idea of a "people" is too diffuse to support them. By engaging this topic linguistically, ethnically, culturally, and ontologically, the voices in this volume help separate "people" from its fraught associations to pursue more vital formulations. Together with Democracy in What State?, in which Giorgio Agamben, Alain Badiou, Daniel Bensaid, Wendy Brown, Jean-Luc Nancy, Jacques Rancière, Kristin Ross, and Slavoj Žižek discuss the nature and purpose of democracy today, What Is a People? expands an essential exploration of political action and being in our time." --> na ščitnem ov. - Opombe z bibliografijo: str. 133-152. - Kazalo
