The first exhibition of the nascent international Arteast Collection 2000+
Moderna galerija's decision to start building a unique international collection based on the concept of dialogue led to lively connections with other cultural spaces and opened up new possible channels of communication. The first exhibition of the collection presenting over eighty artists from Eastern and Western Europe fortuitously coincided with the Ljubljana edition of Manifesta and met with great acclaim at home and abroad.
The press called Moderna galerija "the first institution in Europe to start systematically collecting works by Eastern European artists and redefining the history of postwar art ... "
The renowned art critic for the New York Village Voice, Kim Levin selected it as the exhibition of 2000 for the German magazine ART.
In 2001 Arteast Collection 2000+ was invited to Innsbruck, as an accompanying event to the meeting of European ministers of culture, and a year later to the famous ZKM - Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe and to Skopje, where it was the inaugural event for a new building dedicated to contemporary art.
At the ViennaArtfair in April 2005, Moderna galerija presented its plans for the development of the collection, whose works are included in all the major exhibitions of Eastern and Central European art (see below).
31 May 2003
Opening of the international exhibition Form-Specific (31 May - 31 July 2003)
In 2003, Moderna galerija conceived a series of shows entitled Arteast Exhibitions. They complement the Arteast Collection 2000+, exploring the current issues in the political and geographical area covered by the collection (i.e., mostly Eastern Europe) and lay the groundwork for its future development.
In addition to that, the series aims to continually promote both the Arteast Collection 2000+ and the evolving museum. Form-Specific was the first exhibition in the series, and it was staged at Metelkova 22; the following three were staged at the Moderna galerija building because of the construction works at Metelkova: 7 Sins: Ljubljana-Moscow (2004), Interrupted Histories (2006) and The Arteast Collection 2000+23 (2006).
12 - 14 September 2003
Event on the 10th anniversary of the ACZ Metelkova
8 p.m. - 11 p.m.
On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the forming of the Autonomous Cultural Zone Metelkova, a special event was organized that highlighted an artwork from the international Arteast Collection 2000+, the eminent conceptualist artist Lawrence Weiner's SOME SAND + SOME HEAT. Moderna galerija purchased this inscription from Weiner; now it forms part of the south façade of Metelkova 22 and belongs to Metelkova as a public work.
In cooperation with Radio Študent, Moderna galerija organized a telephone interview with the artist, which went on air on Friday, 12 September 2003. Everyone attending the event at Metelkova could listen to the interview there, and watch a slideshow presenting the events that had taken place at Metelkova 22 until that time.
