AMOR, Mónica
Theories of the nonobject : Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela, 1944-1969 / Mónica Amor. - Oakland : University of California Press, cop. 2016. - X, 309 str., [16] str. pril. : ilustr. ; 26 cm

"Theories of the Nonobject investigates the crisis of the sculptural and painterly object in the concrete, neoconcrete, and constructivist practices of artists in Argentina, Brazil, and Venezuela. Monica Amor, a native of Venezuela, presents case studies of specific movements, artists, and critics, tracing their role in the significant reconceptualization of the artwork that Brazilian critic and poet Ferreira Gullar heralded in "Theory of the Nonobject," a seminal essay published in 1959 in the Suplemento Dominical do Jornal do Brasil. Based on deep archival research, this distinctive book brings scholarly attention to a group of major art figures, including Lygia Clark, Helio Oiticica, and Gego, whose work proposed engaged forms of spectatorship that dismissed medium-based understandings of art. Exploring the philosophical, economic, and political underpinnings of geometric abstraction in post-World War II South America, Amor highlights the overlapping inquiries of artists and critics who, working on the periphery of European and US modernism, contributed to a sophisticated conversation about the nature of the art object." --> na zavihku ov. - Opombe z bibliografijo: str. 219-285. - Kazalo

What we need is a more open point of view that allows us to see beyond the limitations of our habits, areas of expertise, and outdated ideologies and to picture the plurality and contradictions of our modern, networked globe. A new big picture, without any central perspective one that is no longer projected from the center of a single power, but is instead a patchwork made up of a variety of stances. The 2012 Ars Electronica collects examples from art and science that show, in inspiring ways, how the open-minded perspective allows us to see more of the larger whole and also brings new knowledge to light. How does this sort of big picture have to be constituted in our day and age, and what strategies are required to bring it about?" --> na ov.

Nasl. na ov.: Ars electronica 2014 : festival for art, technology and society. - Biografije avtorjev: str. 262-271. - "Knowledge, creativity, ideas: the raw materials of the future. This insight has been making the rounds for quite a while now, and opinion leaders in politics and business are only too eager to hop on the bandwagon. Everyone's for creativity, everybody calls for a better trained staff, and all want to profit from new ideas. But who is prepared to contribute to this? Who understands that these raw materials don't have to be depleted, they have to be maximized; that they can't be harvested, they can only be invested? Creativity and innovation don't just appear out of the blue, and they resist being conjured up, no matter how clever the design thinking and strategic innovation management methods implemented to bring them forth. Only when we grasp the workings of the ecosystem of creativity and innovation, when we respect it and provide it with sufficient nourishment, only then can we as a society hope to profit from it. 2014, the Ars Electronica Festival's mission is to discover what it takes to change and to call for answers from all directions, from various disciplines, and from different places all over the world." --> na ov.

Nasl. na ov.: Ars electronica : festival for art, technology and society. - Biografije avtorjev: str. 370-381. - "Much of which makes up our cities today stems from the industrial era. But how will cities and habitats be organized thereafter? What will they look like when more robots than people work in the factories, when objects are intelligently linked with one another, when cars drive by themselves and mail is delivered by drones, when climate change makes itself felt, the new megacities run out of air to breathe and the new ones run out of money? Rethinking urban habitats has already begun, and exciting ideas for new architecture and forms of social organization are emerging throughout the world that can keep pace with the changes taking place in upcoming decades. Experts from all corners of the earth assemble in Linz to be part of an extraordinary think tank. With a total area of 100,000 square meters, the former mail and package distribution center on the railroad grounds becomes the venue for the festival and a laboratory for the city of the future." --> na ov.

BIDWELL, John
Graphic passion : Matisse and the book arts : [Morgan Library & Museum, New York, 30 October 2015 - 18 January 2016] / John Bidwell ; with contributions by Michael M. Baylson ... [et al.]. - University Park, Pennsylvania : The Pennsylvania State University Press ; New York : The Morgan Library & Museum, cop. 2015. - IX, 250 str. : ilustr. ; 29 cm. - (The Penn State series in the history of the book)

"The great painter Henri Matisse was also a great book illustrator. A pioneering member of the Fauves, a supreme colorist, a remarkable draftsman, and a creative genius: this is the Matisse known and admired by everyone with even a passing interest in modern art. But few know Matisse as an artist who designed and illustrated his own books. From 1912 until his death in 1954, he engaged in nearly fifty illustration projects, many of which rank among the greatest artists books of the twentieth century. A master printmaker, equally adept in various media, he ensured that his prints would appear to best advantage in conjunction with the printed page. He directly participated in page layout, typography, lettering, ornament, cover design, and even the choice of text. More than any others of his rank and stature, he knew the principles of visual communication and perceived the potential of letterpress printing. Graphic Passion recounts the publication history of nearly fifty books illustrated by Matisse, including masterworks such as Lettres portugaises, Mallarme s Poesies, and his own Jazz. It is the first comprehensive, in-depth analysis of his book-production ventures and the first systematic survey of this topic in English. Drawing on unpublished correspondence and business documents, it contains new information about his illustration methods, typographic precepts, literary sensibilities, and staunch opinions about the role of the artist in the publication process." --> na zavihku ov. - Drugi dodatek k nasl. naveden v kolofonu. - Bibliografija: str. 235-241. - Kazalo

DAMISCH, Hubert
Noah's ark : essays on architecture / Hubert Damisch ; edited and introduction by Anthony Vidler ; translated by Julie Rose. - Cambridge (Mass.) ; London : The MIT Press, cop. 2016. - XIX, 371 str. : ilustr. ; 20 cm. - (Writing architecture)

"Trained as an art historian but viewing architecture from the perspective of a "displaced philosopher," Hubert Damisch in these essays offers a meticulous parsing of language and structure to "think architecture in a different key," as Anthony Vidler puts it in his introduction. Drawn to architecture because it provides "an open series of structural models," Damisch examines the origin of architecture and then its structural development from the nineteenth through the twenty-first centuries. He leads the reader from Jean-Francois Blondel to Eugene Viollet-le-Duc to Mies van der Rohe to Diller + Scofidio, with stops along the way at the Temple of Jerusalem, Vitruvius's De Architectura, and the Louvre. In the title essay, Damisch moves easily from Diderot's Encylopedie to Noah's Ark (discussing the provisioning, access, floor plan) to the Pan American Building to Le Corbusier to Ground Zero. Noah's Ark marks the origin of construction, and thus of architecture itself. Diderot's Encylopedie entry on architecture followed his entry on Noah's Ark; architecture could only find its way after the Flood. In these thirteen essays, written over a span of forty years, Damisch takes on other histories and theories of architecture to trace a unique trajectory of architectural structure and thought. The essays are, as Vidler says, "a set of exercises" in thinking about architecture." --> na zavihku ov. - Opombe z bibliografijo: str. 329-359. - Kazalo

LE Va, Barry
Barry Le Va : the aesthetic aftermath / [text] Michael Maizels. - Minneapolis ; London : University of Minnesota Press, cop. 2015. - XX, 209 str. : ilustr. ; 21 cm

Nasl. raztegnjen čez dve str. - "Of the conceptual artists who began their careers in the 1960s and 1970s Bruce Nauman, Chris Burden, Vito Acconci, and Mel Bochner among them Barry Le Va may be the most elusive. As this first study of his work reveals, his rigorously planned art was instigated to mask its creator s intentions and methods, presenting itself as an aftermath of modernism s claim to permanency and civil society s preferred mode of monumentalism. For Michael Maizels, Le Va s work constitutes a particularly productive subject of inquiry because it clearly articulates the interconnection between the avant-garde s distrust of autonomous art objects, two decades of social unrest, the emergence of information theory, and lingering notions of scientific objectivity. "Barry Le Va: The Aesthetic Aftermath" explores how Le Va used such materials as shattered glass, spent bullets, sound recordings, scattered flour, and meat cleavers embedded in a floor to challenge the interlocking assumptions behind blind faith in lasting beauty, just government, and perfectible knowledge. Taking inspiration from popular crime novels as well as contemporary art theory, Le Va charged his viewers to attempt, like detectives at a crime scene, to decipher an order underlying the apparent chaos. Le Va s installations were designed to erode not simply the presumed autonomy of the art object but also the economic and political authority of the art establishment. In his concluding chapter, Maizels looks at the more fixed work of the past two decades in which Le Va turned to architectural themes and cast concrete to probe the limits of dynamism and the idea of permanence." --> na ov. - Opombe z bibliografijo: str. 185-206. - Kazalo

QUEER / [edited by David J. Getsy]. - Cambridge (Mass.) ; London : The MIT Press, 2016. - 237 str. ; 21 cm. - (Documents of contemporary art)

Urednik naveden na vzpor. nasl. str. - Biografije umetnikov: str. 226-228. - "Historically, "queer" was the slur used against those who were perceived to be or made to feel abnormal. Beginning in the 1980s, "queer" was reappropriated and embraced as a badge of honor. While queer draws its politics and affective force from the history of non-normative, gay, lesbian, and bisexual communities, it is not equivalent to these categories, nor is it an identity. Rather, it offers a strategic undercutting of the stability of identity and of the dispensation of power that shadows the assignment of categories and taxonomies. Artists who identify their practices as queer today call forth utopian and dystopian alternatives to the ordinary, adopt outlaw stances, embrace criminality and opacity, and forge unprecedented kinships, relationships, loves, and communities. Rather than a book of queer theory for artists, this is a book of artists' queer tactics and infectious concepts. By definition, there can be no singular "queer art." Here, in the first Documents of Contemporary Art anthology to be centered on artists' writings, numerous conversations about queer practice are brought together from diverse individual, social and cultural contexts. Together these texts describe and examine the ways in which artists have used the concept of queer as a site of political and institutional critique, as a framework to develop new families and histories, as a spur to action, and as a basis from which to declare inassimilable difference. Artists and writers include Nayland Blake, Gregg Bordowitz, Leigh Bowery, AA Bronson, A. K. Burns, Giuseppe Campuzano, Tee Corinne, Barbara DeGenevieve, Dyke Action Machine!, Elmgreen & Dragset, Rotimi Fani-Kayode, Simon Fujiwara, Malik Gaines, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Gran Fury, Sunil Gupta, Hahn Thi Pham, Harmony Hammond, Sharon Hayes, Hudson, Roberto Jacoby, Derek Jarman, Isaac Julien, Mahmoud Khaled, Zoe Leonard, Lesbian Avengers, Catherine Lord, Ma Liuming, LTTR, Allyson Mitchell, Zanele Muholi, Carlos Motta, Ocana, Helio Oiticica, Catherine Opie, Ridykeulous (Nicole Eisenman & A.L. THOMPSON, Jerry L.
        Why photography matters / Jerry L. Thompson. - Cambridge (Mass.) ; London : The MIT Press, cop. 2013. - 92 str. : ilustr. ; 21 cm

"Photography matters, writes Jerry Thompson, because of how it works -- not only as an artistic medium but also as a way of knowing. It matters because how we understand what photography is and how it works tell us something about how we understand anything. With these provocative observations, Thompson begins a wide-ranging and lucid meditation on why photography is unique among the picture-making arts. Thompson, a working photographer for forty years, constructs an argument that moves with natural logic from Thomas Pynchon (and why we read him for his vision and not his command of miscellaneous facts) to Jonathan Swift to Plato to Emily Dickinson (who wrote "Tell all the Truth but tell it slant") to detailed readings of photographs by Eugene Atget, Garry Winogrand, Marcia Due, Walker Evans, and Robert Frank. He questions Susan Sontag's assertion in On Photography that "nobody" can any longer imagine literate, authoritative, or transcendent photographs. He considers the money-fueled expansion of the market for photography, and he compares ambitious "meant-for-the-wall" photographs with smaller, quieter works. Forcefully and persuasively, Thompson argues for photography as a medium concerned with understanding the world we live in -- a medium whose business is not constructing fantasies pleasing to the eye or imagination but describing the world in the toughest and deepest way." --> na zavihku ščit. ov. - Bibliografija: str. 89-92
