BROECKMANN, Andreas
Machine art in the twentieth century / Andreas Broeckmann. - Cambridge (Mass.) ; London : The MIT Press, cop. 2016. - X, 376 str., [12] str. pril. : ilustr. ; 24 cm. - (Leonardo)

"Machine art is neither a movement nor a genre, but encompasses diverse ways in which artists engage with technical systems. In this book, Andreas Broeckmann examines a variety of twentieth- and early twenty-first-century artworks that articulate people's relationships with machines. In the course of his investigation, Broeckmann traces historical lineages that connect art of different periods, looking for continuities that link works from the end of the century to developments in the 1950s and 1960s and to works by avant-garde artists in the 1910s and 1920s. An art historical perspective, he argues, might change our views of recent works that seem to be driven by new media technologies but that in fact continue a century-old artistic exploration. Broeckmann investigates critical aspects of machine aesthetics that characterized machine art until the 1960s and then turns to specific domains of artistic engagement with technology: algorithms and machine autonomy, looking in particular at the work of the Canadian artist David Rokeby; vision and image, and the advent of technical imaging; and the human body, using the work of the Australian artist Stelarc as an entry point to art that couples the machine to the body, mechanically or cybernetically. Finally, Broeckmann argues that systems thinking and ecology have brought about a fundamental shift in the meaning of technology, which has brought with it a rethinking of human subjectivity. He examines a range of artworks, including those by the Japanese artist Seiko Mikami, whose work exemplifies the shift." --> na zavihku ov. - Bibliografija: str. 331-365. - Kazalo

CHAUBIN, Frédéric
CCCP : cosmic communist constructions photographed / photographs and essay by Frédéric Chaubin ; [English translation Charles Penwarden, German translation Helmut Roß]. - Köln : Taschen, cop. 2015. - 312 str. : ilustr. ; 35 cm

Vzpor. besedilo v angl., nem. in franc. - "Photographer Frederic Chaubin reveals 90 buildings sited in fourteen former Soviet Republics which express what could be considered as the fourth age of Soviet architecture. They reveal an unexpected rebirth of imagination, an unknown burgeoning that took place from 1970 until 1990. Contrary to the twenties and thirties, no "school" or main trend emerges here. These buildings represent a chaotic impulse brought about by a decaying system. Their diversity announces the end of Soviet Union. Taking advantage of the collapsing monolithic structure, the holes of the widening net, architects revisited all the chronological periods and styles, going back to the roots or freely innovating. Some of the daring ones completed projects that the Constructivists would have dreamt of (Druzhba sanatorium), others expressed their imagination in an expressionist way (Tbilisi wedding palace). A summer camp, inspired by sketches of a prototype lunar base, lays claim to its suprematist influence (Promethee). Then comes the speaking architecture widespread in the last years of the USSR: a crematorium adorned with concrete flames (Kiev crematorium), a technological institute with a flying saucer crashed on the roof (Kiev institute), a political center watching you like a Big Brother (Kaliningrad House of Soviet). This puzzle of styles testifies to all the ideological dreams of the period, from the obsession with the cosmos to the rebirth of privacy and it also outlines the geography of the USSR, showing how local influences made their exotic twists before bringing the country to its end." --> s splet. str. založnika

CONCEPTUAL art in Britain : 1964-1979 : [Tate Britain, London, 12 April-29 August 2016] / [[texts by] Andrew Wilson, Elena Crippa, Jo Melvin, Luke Skrebowski, George Clark]. - London : Tate Publishing, 2016. - 159 str. : ilustr. ; 25 cm

"In the 1960s artists began to abandon traditional approaches and made ideas the essence of their work. This fascinating exhibition explores this pivotal period in British history, which changed the way we think about art to this day. It gathers together artists who took art beyond its traditional boundaries to suggest new ways of engaging with the realities of the world beyond the studio, which ultimately led to a questioning of the function and social purpose of art. The radical and controversial work both scrutinised and consistently took inspiration from the real world. Asking what art is, as well as what it might be for, inevitably led some artists to create work that was often politically engaged with themes and issues ranging from feminism to the Troubles in Northern Ireland. Seen within the context of its time, spanning Harold Wilson's first Labour government to the election of Margaret Thatcher, this show reveals conceptual art's lasting legacy. Artists featured within the show include, among others: Keith Arnatt, Art & Language, Conrad Atkinson, Victor Burgin, Michael Craig-Martin, Hamish Fulton, Margaret Harrison, Susan Hiller, John Hilliard, Mary Kelly, John Latham, Richard Long, Bruce McLean, David Tremlett and Stephen Willats." --> s spletne str. založnika. - Drugi dodatek k nasl. naveden v kolofonu. - Izbrana bibliografija: str. 152-153. - Kazalo

Besedilo v slov. in delni prevod v angl. - O avtorjih na zadnjem zavihku ov. - Predgovori / Andrej Kranjc, Vera Smole, Peter Fister: str. 6-13. - 300 izv. - Bibliografija: str. 156-158. - Izvleček ; Abstract ; Extrait ; Zusammenfassung

KANDEL, Eric R.
Reductionism in art and brain science : bridging the two cultures / Eric R. Kandel. - New York : Columbia University Press, 2016. - X, 226 str. : ilustr. ; 24 cm

"In Reductionism in Art and Brain Science, Kandel shows how this radically reductionist approach, applied to the most complex puzzle of our time-the brain-has been employed by modern artists who distill their subjective world into color, form, and light. Kandel demonstrates through bottom-up sensory and top-down cognitive functions how science can explore the complexities of human perception and help us to perceive, appreciate, and understand great works of art. At the heart of the book is an elegant elucidation of the contribution of reductionism to the evolution of modern art and its role in a monumental shift in artistic perspective. Reductionism steered the transition from figurative art to the first explorations of abstract art reflected in the works of Turner, Monet, Kandinsky, Schoenberg, and Mondrian. Kandel explains how, in the postwar era, Pollock, de Kooning, Rothko, Louis, Turrell, and Flavin used a reductionist approach to arrive at their abstract expressionism and how Katz, Warhol, Close, and Sandback built upon the advances of the New York School to reimagine figurative and minimal art. Featuring captivating drawings of the brain alongside full-color reproductions of modern art masterpieces, this book draws out the common concerns of science and art and how they illuminate each other." --> na zavihku ov. - Bibliografija: str. 197-208

PHOTOGRAPHY and the optical unconscious / Shawn Michelle Smith, Sharon Sliwinski, editors. - Durham ; London : Duke University Press, 2017. - 381 str., [16] str. pril. : ilustr. ; 23 cm

Avtorji besedil: Mary Bergstein, Jonathan Fardy, Kristan Horton, Terri Kapsalis, Sarah Kofman, Elisabeth Lebovici, Zoe Leonard, Gabrielle Moser, Mignon Nixon, Thy Phu, Mark Reinhardt, Shawn Michelle Smith, Sharon Sliwinski, Laura Wexler, Kelly Wood, Andrés Mario Zervigón. - "Photography is one of the principal filters through which we engage the world. The contributors to this volume focus on Walter Benjamin's concept of the optical unconscious to investigate how photography has shaped history, modernity, perception, lived experience, politics, race, and human agency. In essays that range from examinations of Benjamin's and Sigmund Freud's writings to the work of Kara Walker and Roland Barthes's famous Winter Garden photograph, the contributors explore what photography can teach us about the nature of the unconscious. They attend to side perceptions, develop latent images, discover things hidden in plain sight, focus on the disavowed, and perceive the slow. Of particular note are the ways race and colonialism have informed photography from its beginning. The volume also contains photographic portfolios by Zoe Leonard, Kelly Wood, and Kristan Horton, whose work speaks to the optical unconscious while demonstrating how photographs communicate on their own terms. The essays and portfolios in Photography and the Optical Unconscious create a collective and sustained assessment of Benjamin's influential concept, opening up new avenues for thinking about photography and the human psyche." --> z ov. - Bibliografija z opombami pri posameznih prispevkih. - Kazalo

The USES of photography : art, politics, and the reinvention of a medium : [Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in La Jolla, California, September 24, 2016 - January 2, 2017] / edited by Jill Dawsey ; with contributions by David Antin ... [et al.]. - La Jolla : Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego ; Oakland : University of California Press, cop. 2016. - 223 str. : ilustr. ; 28 cm

"The Uses of Photography examines a network of artists who were active in Southern California between the late 1960s and early 1980s and whose experiments with photography opened the medium to a profusion of new strategies and subjects. These artists introduced urgent social issues and themes of everyday life into the seemingly neutral territory of conceptual art, through photographic works that took on hybrid forms, from books and postcards to video and text-and-image installations. Tracing a crucial history of photoconceptual practice, The Uses of Photography focuses on an artistic community that formed in and around the young University of California San Diego, founded in 1960, and its visual arts department, founded in 1967. Artists such as Eleanor Antin, Allan Kaprow, Fred Lonidier, Martha Rosler, Allan Sekula, and Carrie Mae Weems employed photography and its expanded forms as a means to dismantle modernist autonomy, to contest notions of photographic truth, and to engage in political critique. The work of these artists shaped emergent accounts of postmodernism in the visual arts and their influence is felt throughout the global contemporary art world today." --> z ov. - Drugi dodatek k nasl. naveden v kolofonu. - Bibliografija pri posameznih prispevkih in str. 205-207. - Kazalo
