BEECH, Dave
Art and value : art's economic exceptionalism in classical, neoclassical and Marxist economics / by Dave Beech. - Chicago : Haymarket books, 2016. - X, 392 str. ; 23 cm. - (Historical materialism book series)

"Art and Value is the first comprehensive analysis of art's political economy throughout classical, neoclassical and Marxist economics. It provides a critical-historical survey of the theories of art's economic exceptionalism, of art as a merit good, and of the theories of art's commodification, the culture industry and real subsumption. Key debates on the economics of art are examined in detail. Subjecting mainstream and Marxist theories of art's economics to an exacting critique, Art and Value concludes with a new Marxist theory of art's economic exceptionalism." --> na ov. - Bibliografija: str. 371-384. - Kazalo

BOTTICELLI and treasures from the Hamilton collection : [Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin, 16 October 2015 - 24 January 2016, The Courtauld Gallery, London, 18 February - 15 May 2016] / edited by Dagmar Korbacher ; with contributions by Stephanie Buck, Dagmar Korbacher, and Frauke Steenbock with Beatrice Alai and Georg Josef Dietz. - London : Paul Holberton Publishing, cop. 2016. - 168 str. : ilustr. ; 26 cm

"In 1882 the Berlin Kupferstichkabinett (Prints and Drawings Museum) acquired, from the collection of the Duke of Hamilton, Sandro Botticelli's spectacular series of drawings on parchment illustrating scenes from Dante's 'Divine Comedy'. It also acquired nearly all the items in the duke's priceless collection of illuminated manuscripts. The wider British public only became aware of these masterpieces when rumours of the Berlin museum's attempts to woo the Scottish duke started circulating in the press. No less than Queen Victoria and her daughter, wife of the German crown prince, appealed for these treasures to remain in the UK. In spite of their efforts, the Berlin museum pulled off a sensational coup in acquiring the Hamilton collection. Since then the Botticelli drawings and the splendid Hamilton manuscripts have formed the cornerstone of the Kupferstichkabinett's collection and are regarded as amongst the very greatest treasures of the Berlin State Museums. Accompanying an exhibition that brings back to the UK some of the greatest of the former Hamilton treasures, this book includes no less than thirty of Botticelli's exquisite 'Dante drawings'. The series is of the highest order of importance and rarity, and this book will be an exceptional opportunity to explore the great Renaissance master's interpretation of one of the canonical texts of world literature." --> na ov. - Dodatek k nasl. naveden v kolofonu. - Bibliografija: str. 162-168

BRUEGEL, Pieter, ok. 1525-1569, st.
Bruegel in black and white : three grissailes reunited : [The Courtauld Gallery, London, 4 February-8 May 2016] / [text] Karen Serres ; with contributions by Dominique Allart ... [et al.]. - London : The Courtauld Gallery, cop. 2016. - 60 str. : ilustr. ; 21 cm

"Accompanying a focused display at The Courtauld Gallery that will bring together for the first time Pieter Bruegel the Elder's only three known grisaille paintings - the Courtauld's Christ and the Woman Taken in Adultery (which is barred from travel), The Death of the Virgin from Upton House in Warwickshire (National Trust) and Three Soldiers from the Frick Collection in New York - this book will examine the sources, function and reception of these three exquisite masterpieces. The panels will be complemented by prints and contemporary replicas, as well by other independent grisailles in order to shed light on the development of this genre in Northern Europe. Despite his status as the seminal Netherlandish painter of the 16th century, Pieter Bruegel the Elder (c. 1525-1569) remains an elusive artist: fewer than forty paintings are ascribed to him. Of these, a dozen are cabinet-sized. These small-scale works offer key insights as they often bear a personal significance for the artist and were sometimes given as gifts to friends and patrons. Presenting these works together for the first time is not only an extraordinary and unprecedented opportunity but it will be extremely revealing, considering their unusual nature in both Bruegel's oeuvre and 16th-century art in general. Monochrome painting in shades of grey was a mainstay of Netherlandish art from the early 15th century, most often present on the wings of altarpieces and preparatory sketches for engravings. In contrast, Bruegel's panels constitute one of the earliest and rare examples of independent cabinet pictures in grisaille, created for private contemplation and enjoyment. This seemingly austere type of painting has often been imbued with religious or political significance. On a purely artistic level, it enabled the painter to showcase his skill by limiting his palette. The publication, which includes a technical investigation of the three panels, will provide the opportunity to reassess the practical aspects of the grisaille technique and the many ways in which this effect was achieved. Indeed, Bruegel's three monochromatic paintings display quite different techniques, raising the question of the painter's intent." --> na ov. - Drugi dodatek k nasl. naveden v kolofonu. - Opombe z bibliografijo: str. 56-60

CAGE, John
Silence : lectures and writings / John Cage. - 6. ponatis. - London : Marion Boyars, 2015. - 276 str. ; 22 cm

Nasl. raztegnjen čez dve str. - "John Cage, a leading figure of the American musical avant-garde and lecturer and writer extraordinary, dedicated himself to the search for new horizons in musical composition. Silence is a collection of some of the essays and lectures that have made John Cage's name synonymous with all that is unpredictable and exciting in contemporary miusic. Outrageous they may be, but to anyone who is receptive to new ideas, to fresh and original ways of looking at and listening to things, they are a mine of fascinating discovery. And, as Cage fans will expect, the book also contains a wealth of handy information on collecting mushrooms, fishing through ice, and so on, as well as many anecdotes and Zen-type stories which illustrate Cage's exuberant artistic pre-occupations." --> na ov.

CROWTHER, Paul
How pictures complete us : the beautiful, the sublime, and the divine / Paul Crowther. - Stanford : Stanford University Press, cop. 2016. - XI, 178 str. : ilustr. ; 23 cm

"Despite the wonders of the digital world, people still go in record numbers to view drawings and paintings in galleries. Why? What is the magic that pictures work on us? This book provides a provocative explanation, arguing that some pictures have special kinds of beauty and sublimity that offer aesthetic transcendence. They take us imaginatively beyond our finite limits and even invoke a sense of the divine. Such aesthetic transcendence forges a relationship with the ultimate and completes us psychologically. Philosophers and theologians sometimes account for this as an effect of art, but How Pictures Complete Us distinguishes itself by revealing how this experience is embodied in pictorial structures and styles. Through detailed discussions of artworks from the Renaissance through postmodern times, Paul Crowther reappraises the entire scope of beauty and the sublime in the context of both representational and abstract art, offering unexpected insights into familiar phenomena such as Ideal beauty, pictorial perspective, and what pictures are in the first place." --> na ov. - Opombe z bibliografijo: str. 161-171. - Kazalo

DADAGLOBE reconstructed : [Kunsthaus Zürich, 5 February - 1 May 2016, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, 12 June - 18 September 2016] / Adrian Sudhalter ; Anne and Michel Sanouillet, Cathérine Hug, Samantha Friedman, Lee Ann Daffner and Karl Buchberg. - Zürich : Kunsthaus Zürich : Scheidegger & Spiess, cop. 2016. - 143, 160 str. : ilustr. ; 26 cm

Dodatek k nasl. naveden v kolofonu. - "Dadaglobe was to be the definitive anthology of the Dada movement. Had it been published in 1921 as planned, it would have constituted more than one hundred artworks by some thirty artists from seven countries, showing Dada to be an artistic and literary movement with truly global reach. Yet, mainly due to a lack of funding, it remained unpublished, leaving a remarkable void in the literature on this early twentieth-century movement.Dadaglobe Reconstructed restores this fascinating literary artefact with reproductions of the works of art received by the Romanian poet and cofounder of the Dada movement Tristan Tzara. His call for submissions in four categories - drawings, photographs of artworks, photographic self-portraits, and book layouts was met not merely with existing works. The parameters for production also served as a catalyst for the creation of many new ones, including some of the Dada movement's most iconic works. For the first time, the collection is presented here in full colour and alongside essays examining Tzara's concept and the history of Dada and Dadaglobe." --> na ov.

Art in Europe 1945-1968: Facing the Future shows how artists such as Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Ossip Zadkine, Henry Moore, Renato Guttuso, Fernand Léger, Yves Klein, Gerhard Richter and Lucian Freud worked through the trauma of 1940-1945 and the Cold War, and started to explore new directions in art. This reference work includes some 400 works by 150 artists, bringing together for the first time post-war art from both Western and Eastern Europe. "This richly illustrated book examines the making of the first modern catalogue - La galerie electorale de Dusseldorff. Published in 1778, the revolutionary two-volume publication showcases one of the most important European painting collections of the eighteenth century, reflecting a pivotal moment in the history of art as well as the history of the art museum. In two essays, the authors analyse the process by which the catalogue was produced and shed light on the historical and cultural context that gave rise to an innovative and didactic way of displaying paintings - and, by extension, to art history as a discipline." --> na zavihku ov. - Bibliografija: str. 92-95

Revisions : zen for film : [Bard Graduate Center, New York, September 18, 2015 - January 10, 2016] / Hanna B. Hölling. - New York : Bard Graduate Center, 2015. - XII, 100 str. : ilustr. ; 23 cm

Drugi dodatek k nasl. naveden v kolofonu. - "How do works of art endure over time in the face of aging materials and changing interpretations of their meaning? How do decay, technological obsolescence, and the blending of old and new media affect what an artwork is and can become? And how can changeable artworks encourage us to rethink our assumptions of art as fixed and static? Revisions is a unique exploration of all of these questions. In this catalog, which accompanies an exhibition at the Bard Graduate Center, Hanna B. Holling examines Zen for Film, also known as Fluxfilm no. 1, one of the most evocative works by Korean-American artist Nam June Paik. Created during the early 1960s, this piece consists of a several-minutes-long screening of blank film; as the film ages and wears in the projector, the viewer is confronted with a constantly evolving work. Because of this mutability, the project, as HA lling shows, undermines any assumption that art can be subject to a single interpretation. By focusing on a single artwork and unfolding the inspirations, transitions, and residues that have occurred in the course of that work's existence, Revisions offers an in-depth look at how materiality enhances visual knowledge. A fresh perspective on a piece with a rich history of display, this catalog invites interdisciplinary dialogue and asks precisely what-and when-an artwork might be." --> na zavihku ščitnega ov. - Bibliografija: str. 91-96. - Kazalo

Drugi dodatek k nasl. naveden v kolofonu. - "Half the World traces the ways in which women artists deftly transformed the language of sculpture to invent radically new forms and processes that privileged studio practice, tactility and the artist's hand. The volume seeks to identify the multiple strains of proto-feminist practices, characterized by abstraction and repetition, which rejected the singularity of the masterwork and rearranged sculptural form to be contingent upon the way the body moved around it in space. The catalogue begins in the immediate post-war era, with the first section spanning the late 1950s through the 1950s. Featuring historically important predecessors including Ruth Asawa, Lee Bontecou, Louise Bourgeois, Claire Falkenstein and Louise Nevelson, this section examines abstraction based on the human figure and the influence of the unconscious. The second section covers the decades of the 1960s and 1970s, and includes Magdalena Abakanowicz, Lynda Benglis, Heidi Bucher, Gego, François Grossen, Eva Hesse, Sheila Hicks, Marisa Merz, Mira Schendel, Michelle Stuart, Hannah Wilke, and Jackie Winsor, a generation of post-minimalist artists who ignited a revolution in their use of process-oriented materials and methods. In the 1980s and 1990s, the period explored in the third section, artists Phyllida Barlow, Isa Genzken, Cristina Iglesias, Liz Larner, Anna Maria Maiolino, Senga Nengudi, and Ursula von Rydingsvard moved beyond singular, three-dimensional objects toward architectonic works characterized by repetition, structure, and design. The final section is comprised of post-2000 works by artists Karla Black, Abigail DeVille, Sonia Gomes, Rachel Khedoori, Lara Schnitger, Shinique Smith, and Jessica Stockholder, artists who create installation-based environments, embracing domestic materials and craft as an embedded discourse." --> iz uv. - Biografije in bibliografije umetnic: str. 222-231

SLOTERDIJK, Peter
Stress and freedom / Peter Sloterdijk ; translated by Wieland Hoban. - Cambridge ; Malden (Mass.) : Polity press, cop. 2016. - V, 60 str. ; 19 cm

"In this short book Peter Sloterdijk offers a genealogy of the concept of freedom from Ancient Greece to the present day. This genealogy is part of a broader theory of the large political body, according to which Sloterdijk argues that political communities arise in response to a form of anxiety or stress. Through a highly original reading of Rousseau's late Reveries of a Solitary Walker, Sloterdijk shows that, for Rousseau, the modern subject emerges as a subject free of all stress, unburdened by the cares of the world. Most of modern philosophy, and above all German Idealism, is an attempt to reign back Rousseau's useless and anarchical subject and anchor it in the cares of the world, in the task of having to produce both the world and itself. In the light of this highly original account, Sloterdijk develops his own distinctive account of freedom, where freedom is conceptualized as the availability for the improbable." --> na ov. - Prevod dela: Stress und Freiheit. - Kazalo
