Shopping District

2016, acrylic, ink, charcoal, pencil, crêpe paper on canvas, 300 x 225 cm

In Miha Štrukelj’s paintings – anonymous and unattractive urban scenes of global metropolises – always already function as media images, as general cities of our collective imagery that juxtaposes equally undefined scenes of deserted little streets of some Asian metropolis, forests of advertising billboards and signs, the chaos of urban traffic and an unrestricted architectural jungle. This is most often the environment in which his recent works manifest, through subtle artistically rendered images, the subject’s alienation and inability to communicate, and the existential isolation of the modern individual.
